Charleston Christmas Card
Duncan Grant | Skating on the Pond, c.1950
Print, 22.5 x 28cm
This proof of a commercial print by Duncan Grant is part of the Angelica Garnett Gift. We are unsure what the image was designed for but it captures a wintery scene at Charleston.
During the long, severe winter of 1947 the pond froze hard enough to walk on. A group of local youngsters came to Charleston to play an impromptu game of ice hockey whilst Quentin Bell skated around them. Maybe this scene was the inspiration for Grant’s print.
An earlier painting of the pond in winter by Grant had been reproduced commercially in 1941 by the appropriately named printmakers Frost and Reed.
