This is a giclée print of a sketch by Vanessa Bell, Portrait of Julian Bell sleeping. Julian Bell was born on 4 February 1908 and in the ensuing weeks and months Vanessa Bell filled an entire sketchbook with sketches of her new born child. This particular piece has been selected as it captures the mood of ‘Intense peace and joy’ which Bell recorded feeling upon first becoming a mother. The original is part of the Angelica Garnett Gift, a collection of 8,000 works given to The Charleston Trust by Angelica Garnett, the daughter of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, in 2008. The new discoveries from this influx of work are helping to increase significantly the current revival of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant as major twentieth century British artists.
